Happy New Year!

Today is the last day of 2004 and so tomorrow brings a new year. 2004 has been a good year around our home with all four of us healthy and doing well.

In 2005 Abby will turn 11 and Gabe will turn 9 which is hard to believe. They are both becoming older faster than seems possible.

Tonight we will spend New Year's Eve with our friends the Fries, at their home in Big Lake Minnesota. We will stay overnight and make pizza, play cards, and wear out the kids so we can have some peace and quiet. It has become another of our traditions with them, along with apple orchards in the fall and Christmas tree cutting in the winter. It is really great to have such good friends, and all of our kids together make quite a group. We have the two, but they have four.

Happy New Year to everyone.

Christmas traditions

Today we put up our Christmas tree in our new room. It looks really good in there. We went out and cut it down on the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend with our friends the Fries. This is something we have done with them every year for quite some time. Putting up the tree is always a fun time because all of the memories that go with the ornaments get talked about again. The first thing to come out for us is the Christmas duck. It is this stuffed animal that quacks Christmas tunes. Abby received it as a gift from her great-grandmother Nana Lee when she was 18 months old. It has come out every year since to bring it's quackiness to our Christmas.

Abby has already had her Christmas piano recital, and she did very well. Tomorrow night is the choir program for the kids, with both Abby and Gabe involved in singing.

Bye for now, more on Christmas to come.

that long since I posted huh?

It has been a while. Thanksgiving has come and gone for another year and we cut down our Christmas tree yesterday afternoon. Time flies.

Abby is doing pretty well in 5th grade but has learned that she must put forth more effort and not just slide by in the bare minimum. She has great potential and we would like to see her use more of it. I am not one of those parents that pressures a kid to get the top grade on everything, but we must do well on a more consistent basis.

Gabe is wearing glasses now. This comes as no big surprise around here as the other three of us are focally challenged as well. He seems to have adjusted to them right away. Gabe is starting to learn at school a faster rate, and we hope he can catch up to his peers more by the end of the year. He is reading much more now and math is making some sense as well. He is a bit behind but is making progress.

I am still working on our addition, but it is getting close. The fireplace is done and trim is being made ready to be installed. Of course we still need to buy some furniture, but that will come soon enough.

I have been working quite a bit at Renco, the place I used to work full time before becoming a stay-at-home dad when Abby was born. They are very busy right now and need the extra help. The extra money is good in this time of year. Check out their website at www.rencocorp.com.

Trip to New York City

Krista and I just returned from a Wednesday night to Sunday morning trip to New York City. Krista had a one day meeting with Reuters that we turned into some vacation for the two of us. With Cargill paying for her plane fare and the hotel room, it was a great time to get away.

We had a great time there and managed to make it to most everything we wanted to see. On Thursday Krista was at her meeting so I just wandered around a bit by myself. Our hotel was two blocks from the United Nations so I walked over there first. It was really too impressive since the security doesnt let you get too close and the flags werent even out. I walked from there up 42nd street to Grand Central Station. The outside is covered in scaffolding for a renovation but the inside was very nice. It is a big place with lots of activity.

A couple of more blocks brought me to the New York Public Library. This also is a very impressive building with lots of marble and woodwork. The main reading room is huge.

Continuing up 42nd Street brought me to Times Square. You are sure you are in America as this place is pure capitalism and consumerism. I was there mis morning and it was very busy. We returned to Times Square three or four times and it was always full of people no matter if it was morning or late night. Krista was in her meeting at Reuters at 3 Times Square, which is a building that overlooks the one where the ball drops on New Year's Eve.

Once Krista was done we had Thursday night and all of Friday and Saturday to explore the city. I will list out some of the places we made it to:

Wall Street and the NYSE, Ground Zero, Staten Island Ferry(past the Statue of Liberty), Guggenheim, Central Park, 5th Ave shopping district, Trump Tower, Empire State Building, St.Patrick's Cathedral, and other churches too.

We rode the subway around quite a bit and walked a lot too. The Subway is easy to use once you get used to the signs, but you have to figure out which direction is which when you come back to the surface. We walked blocks sometimes thinking we were going one way when we were going the other. We made it to many of the neighborhoods in Manhatten, some by mistake.

We saw one show, Stomp, in the East Village. We never felt in danger at all and got around the city with relative ease.

I will post some pictures once I load them into the computer.

A new season of activity

With the end of summer comes new schedules for all of us. The biggest change for me of course is that the kids are in school during the day. Lots of other things start up too.

Krista has volunteered to teach 1st grade Sunday school this year. Abby has joined "The Wave", the church program for 5th and 6th grade. It is a fun group, and she seems to like it. Gabe goes to his sunday school class as well. Both kids have started a new year of kids choir too.

I have started a new year of choir at church. We have a lot of big things planned this year including Christmas, Easter play, 4th of July services, and a International night with choirs from ethnic churches here in Minneapolis. I am now one of the Section leaders for the Bass/Baritone section and look forward to trying to get these guys to know each other better.

I also am continuing to volunteer on our Public Safety team at church. We provide security and response to emergencies on Sunday and during special events. Just the other night I worked a concert at church by two good Christian bands, Jars of Clay and PFR. We love to hold these large events at Grace Church. It is wonderful to bring in people that have never been to our church as this makes it easier for them to come back for a Sunday service.

Abby has started piano lessons again with our good friend Ruth Fries. Both Abby and Gabe are taking swimming lessons once per week at Foss Swim School. Abby loves it and Gabe is trying not to drown, which I guess is the point. Abby has started another year of dance at The DanceXchange. She is taking two classes back to back and always loves it.

Golf is winding down for the year. I played three 18 hole rounds this year, but all three were with Krista so all were good. I played at Edinburgh USA in Brooklyn Park, Willinger's in Northfield, and Troy Burne in Hudson Wisconsin. Krista had a good year playing a lot of golf. She played in many State tournaments and won her club championship at Edinburgh.

Political unrest

Since the last election cycle, we have had three yard signs burned(melted in the case of plastic) and one stolen. Last year during the Senatorial election here in Minnesota, we had two Norm Coleman signs melted at night, both times while we were home sleeping. One month ago we had a sign for the Luis Palau Twin Cities Festival burned. Just a few days ago, our Bush/Cheney '04 sign was taken from our yard, leaving just the wire frame.

At first I thought it was a local kid or group of kids just making mischief. At this point I do believe it is politically motivated since the Paul Wellstone signs last time and the Kerry/Edwards signs this time have been left alone. I do wish to make it clear that I am not blaming Democrats in general.

It seems there must be one person out there that is not satisfied with supporting his/her own candidate, but feels it neccesary to try to take away my right to support the candidate of my choice. This is sad. This is a person who surely does not hold to the same democratic ideals that I do.

Lets keep it civil people.

Contractor wraps up

Today I paid up the final bill with our contractor for our addition and remodel job. There is still work to be done but now it falls on my shoulders. I have made progress on window staining and sealing, but much more of that to come. Soon I need to get outside and put on gutters and downspouts.

A big thank-you goes to Plumbline Builders, our contractor, and to Benny Martinez, the project coordinator. Plumbline did a great job on the project and finished on time as well. Everything looks good and they were quick to respond to our concerns in a few areas. Check them out at www.plbonline.com.

The kids start school on Monday and they both seem excited about it. Abby is in the 5th grade and Gabe is in 2nd. I hope that having them in school helps me to make some good progress on the things I have to do around the house. I will be glad to have them at school as I know they both like it and since we have a great school, I know they will learn.

A few days to thirteen years

On August 23, 2004 I will have been married to Krista Lee for 13 years. I wanted to be sure to write about it because she is so important to me. I need to make it clear to anyone that reads this that I would marry her again and love her more today than I did then.

Krista is my only love. I know that as a typical guy, I don't communicate my love for her often enough, missing opportunities to say "I love you". I know she is the main reader of this blog so I can tell her here. I love you Krista.

Today I was rehanging some pictures on the wall in our bedroom after the repainting. Two of the pictures are the ones taken of our kids at the hospital after their births, Abby with her fingers sticking out from being prodded for the photo, and Gabe with his lips puckered like he is ready to kiss you. Those photos came after some scary moments, with last minute ceasarians both times. As I think back on those moments today, I remember being scared about the potential for my children not being well, but also remember thinking about the connection and bond that my wife had already developed with these kids, and the kind of pain she would experience if something tragic happened. Thanks to God for two healthy kids, and not having to face that reality. As I hung the photos back on the wall today, I thank God that my wife still has that bond with each of our kids. They still love to cuddle with her, and look to her for the comfort that only Moms can provide. I can see that and I am the at-home parent around here.

One of the other things I was hanging back up was the caricature drawing of Krista and I that we had done on our first wedding anniversary at the Mall of America. This is a great memory of a fun day. One other thing I hung up is a painting of a golf hole at The Pines in northern Minnesota. We have gone to this place for many anniversary golf trips and this photo brings lots of good memories too.

So our walls are full of good sappy memories again, telling a bit of the story of me and my woman, now 13 years and going strong.

Festival weekend

This past weekend was the time for the Luis Palau Festival at our state capital grounds. On Saturday there were about 80,000 people that came at some point during the day and the estimate for Sunday was over 100,000. This was a major event including music, sports games for kids, children's entertainment and craft areas, and a BMX/skate park with demonstrations from pro skaters. All of this was done to bring people together to tell them about the Good News of Jesus. The event went very well thanks to the efforts and prayers of many hundreds of churches in Minnesota. My family went on Saturday evening for the music and for the preaching of Luis Palau, an international evangelist.

On the home front our contractor is just about ready to wrap up their part on our home project. We are having a pro install the wood floor rather than doing that ourselves, and he will be here the week of the 16th. I have started the staining and sealing of windows and have many to go. That along with the repainting of the entire main floor of the house will take a bit to get done.

One child away

Yesterday I drove one of our church busses to camp, dropping off about 100 kids including my 10 year old daughter. She has been to this camp three times before, and loves to go. It is a four night, five day camp at Lake Beauty Bible Camp. You can see their website at lbbc.com. She gets to learn about God, enjoy time with friends, as well as all the other camp stuff like swimming and games and horseback riding.

It is strange to have just Gabe home today. He asked where his sister was this morning before he remembered she went to camp. He stated that that was good because now he could watch his shows without interference from his sister and what she wants to watch.

On Thursday I will drive back to camp to pick up the group.

A busy summer

This summer has been quite busy around our house.  We have had the construction going on for some time now, and the contractor is just about done with their part of the project.  I think we are going to have a pro put in a wood floor rather than doing that ourselves.  We are beginning to get to the staining and sealing of the windows, and then we can paint rooms.  It almost seems never-ending with all the things that need to be done.

Today the kids and I wrapped up the two weeks of day-camps at church.  We had a great time going to lots of places.  We went to the Minnesota Zoo, the Imax Theater, Chutes and Ladders play area, bowling, and mini-golf.  The kids at these camps also get some good Bible lessons and group fun with their friends.  Kids love these camps every year.  My job consists of driving the bus and keeping the kids safe as we go from place to place.  Our church does such a great job of doing ministry for kids with day camps, vacation Bible school, Sunday school, and lots of other events.

Check out our church website at www.atgrace.com if you haven't already.

A new post

My wonderful wife Krista has informed me that I have not posted in some time and that I should, so here it is.

Electricians are here today to put in outlets and hang fixtures.  We are getting very close to getting to woodwork and painting.  Code requires them to put a smoke detector in every bedroom too so now we will have more protection than I think we need, but it couldnt hurt.

This next week bring more day camps at church which I will drive the bus for.  This week we get to go to the Minnesota Zoo, the Old Log Theater and one other place I cant remember.  The kids always enjoy these weeks.

Attending such a large church can be a lot of fun.  There is always something going on to be involved with and as with any church you have to be careful not to over-schedule.  Abby heads off to camp this Sunday and will be gone through Thursday.  I will drive the bus both days.  I know she looks forward to it, she has always enjoyed camp at Lake Beauty.  She gets to hang with girls her age that she knows from church, and they swim and hike and play games.  She looks forward to the horseback riding every year.  We will miss her and it is weird to have one of my kids gone for that many days.

I guess that is enough for now.  Bye.

More work done

Yesterday we started early in the morning and worked most of the day to get the garage roof stripped off and the new roof installed.  Today Krista and I finished it up by putting on the cap pieces.  Thanks again go to Jay for leading us, and to Scott for helping out.  Thom and Twain came by as well but with my kids and wife gone for the day, couldn't get much involved.  I do thank Thom for the help nonetheless.

This next week will bring the finishing of the drywall, final wiring work, re-installation of our AC, and some other final work on the siding and soffits.

We are debating about what flooring to use in the addition.

I finally got back to church on a Sunday today and sang in the second service in Reunion, a group of people from the choir that sings together in the contemporary service.  It was really good to be back.

Twins game today

This afternoon I went to the Twins game at the Metrodome with Abby and Gabe, and my brother-in-law Scott. The kids had a good time since we had hot dogs, Cracker Jack, and ice cream. We had great seats just 16 rows up from home plate thanks to my wonderful wife who purchased them for Father's Day.

I really enjoyed it because it is great to sit close and hear the ball hitting the catcher's mitt, and really see the reactions.

The Twins did not play well and only managed 5 hits and got shut out 2-0 by the Tigers.

As many of you know, I love baseball and would go to more games if I could, especially if I could sit in great seats like today every time.

Back from a nice weekend away

This past weekend we made our way up to Hayward Wisconsin. It has become a yearly gathering place for a bunch of extended family at the Johnson family cabin. We get included by virtue of my wife's Aunt and Uncle being part of that Johnson clan.

We got to play some golf, watch the kids play in the water, get out in the boat, and eat and drink and relax. All in all it was a nice time and we saw some relatives and got a chance to catch up.

The work on the house continues, and today the insulating crew was here. The addition is really starting to look like a room. Just before the weekend the power company buried our lines and now we have all of our power lines, cable TV lines and phone lines underground. It is great to not have these things hanging across our backyard. We are still waiting for the gable windows to arrive so the final stuff can be done.

Still working....

Well, today I am spending some time cleaning up the old roof and getting it into the dumpster. Jay was here last night and will come again today as he gets off work to help get the house roofing done.

The next few days before the July 4th holiday will bring an electrician in, as well as the city inspector.

I feel a bit odd because I am so much out of my normal routine. I am letting the kids watch more TV than usual so it is easier to monitor them as I work on things. I haven't been over to church in a couple of weeks now and I am usually over there involved in something a couple of times per week. This home project has really consumed my life for the time being, and it will for some time yet to come.

We head off to Hayward Wisconsin on Saturday morning for the long weekend. It will be nice to relax and spend some time with family.

Weekend of roofing

What a weekend! It is Monday morning and I am still a bit stiff from all of the physical labor over the last two days. The house remodel that we are doing is continuing and this weekend was my turn to do some work. We ripped off all of the old TWO layers of stuff from the roof and reshingled the house. We still have the new addition to shingle and the garage to rip off and put on the new. Great progress was made mostly due to the great friends and family that came to help.

This weekend could not have happened without the following people:

Jay Fries
Joel Fries
Gaylord Fries
Thom Larsen
Scott Reuterfeldt
John Bogle

Special thanks go to Jay for knowing how to roof a house and leading the crew.

More work is yet ahead for me and my helpers. Other than finishing the roofing, I still need to prepare and install woodwork in the house, lay a new wood floor in the addition, and do some other small jobs related to the project. Today the hired contractors are here finishing up some of the main carpentry work in the addition.

Thanks again to all who have helped so far, and to their families for letting them be here.

Later.

I hope to post pictures when I learn how.
